Diary of an Angry young Man

The book we shall be reviewing today is, ‘The diary of an angry young man’ penned by Rishi Vohra.

Rishi Vohra is an Indian author who is also known for his books like HiFi in Mumbai, I am M-M-Mumbai, and Once upon the tracks of Mumbai.

The story unravels from the point of view of Raghav Verma set in 1992, Colaba, Mumbai. It shifts from 1992 to 2012 as we come across the events that take place in his life that transform him from an angry young man into a thoughtful person. It also addresses many sensitive social issues like the human trafficking, begging mafia, domestic violence, poverty, unemployment, illetracy, gender bias, and  Nirbhaya case in a delicate manner.

Each character in the story is given the amount of importance needed to advance the plot smoothly.

“You never know when life gives you a jolt and pushes you to get on the right track,” is a quote from the book that explains to us that there are no warning signs or omens that indicate to us that our life will take a tremendous turn, so we always need to be prepared.

“Nothing is a coincidence, at the end of it all, you understand it was meant to happen” is an extract from the book that tells us that every little thing that happens to us that we may deem as nothing important may have the power to change the course of our life forever.

“A person may work hard at being a decent human being, but without any income, he would always be tagged a loser” is a quote from the book that addresses the unemployment problem as well as the materialistic world that we currently live in. People are quick to judge but hardly try to understand the situation one may be facing which highly demands for a change in the thought process.

“When you find yourself drowning in a sea of chaos, hard work is the one raft that will see you home safely ashore” is a quote from the book that explains to us that when we work towards our goal with determination all the obstacles in the world won’t be able to stop you from achieving it. It is also a retelling of an old saying, ‘An empty mind is a devil’s workshop’.

“When you try to do the right thing, people will point fingers at you. Outwardly they will criticise you. But inwardly, they wish they could be as brave as you,” is a quote from the book that illustrates to us that in the current society that we live in, we always try to fit into a box crafted by the society. In other words, we try to please people and imitate them and be more like them. We need to understand that everyone is unique and has their own personality, you cannot fit a square into a  box crafted for a circle. We admire the brave people who try to break this chain and be their own person but since we do it in secrecy, all it will do is to lead them into self-doubt and break their spirit,

This is a coming of age story and if you are a fan of books like Perks of being a wallflower, this should be your next read.
