Where is all the grass going?

The book we’re diving into today is Where Is All the Grass Going? by Deborah—a delightfully offbeat and unexpectedly moving tale that blends mystery, humor, and the boundless charm of dogs doing very important (and very secret) things.

Following the success of her debut novel Second Hand Rose, Deborah returns with another heartfelt and imaginative story that celebrates the love we share with our pets—this time, through the eyes of two canine agents on a mission that’s as ridiculous as it is riveting.

Told through a unique third-person lens, the story follows two dog protagonists working for a secret animal-run agency that tackles cases across the globe. Their newest assignment? Grass is mysteriously vanishing from every corner of the world. With time running out and lawns growing suspiciously bald, it’s up to our furry heroes to get to the bottom of it before their agency—and possibly the entire ecosystem—is forced to shut down.

What sets Where Is All the Grass Going? apart is its inventive narrative style. Blending traditional storytelling with newspaper clippings, posters, letters, and real dog photos, Deborah creates a playful patchwork of perspectives that pulls readers into this canine caper. The inclusion of real dog breeds, researched in detail, adds depth and realism to an otherwise delightfully illogical premise.

And yes—this is one of those books where you’ll want to suspend all logic at the door. That’s part of the fun. The world Deborah builds isn’t meant to mirror our own—it’s meant to charm, to entertain, and to gently poke at deeper truths using tails, paws, and just a little doggy espionage.

“There’s something strangely beautiful about seeing the world from a dog's perspective.” By humanizing the dogs and their struggles, the story taps into a surprising emotional core—making us care deeply about these undercover pups and their mission. Treating adoption like parenthood and canine friendship like family, the story gives us a tender reminder of the bonds that truly matter.

That said, the narrator does pop in from time to time with little fun facts and side notes—some readers may find it slightly jarring, as it breaks the flow of immersion. Still, there’s something charmingly meta about the interruptions, almost as if the narrator can’t help but share the excitement of the story alongside you.

The flashbacks to how the secret agency formed—and how our doggy protagonists were recruited—are especially well done, offering a deeper look into the world behind the mystery. While the narrative structure could have been a bit tighter in places, the overall storytelling is rich, warm, and full of heart.

If you love stories that don’t take themselves too seriously but still manage to make you feel, Where Is All the Grass Going? is a must-read. It's a quirky, clever, and surprisingly touching tale about teamwork, hope, and the importance of holding onto joy—no matter how wild the mission gets.
