The book we shall be reviewing today is The Shapeshifter Gambit by Grant Pierce. It is a dark epic fantasy woven with found family, friendships, betrayal, prophecies, and demons. The Shapeshifter Gambit is the first book in The Faceless Chronicles, a six-book series.
Grant Pierce is not only a writer but also a reader and a gamer, and his background in psychology clearly reflects in the way he crafts his characters.
The plot unfolds in a third-person perspective, occasionally shifting into first person for the inner monologue of our protagonist, Kalen. Kalen, the son of a blacksmith, shares a brother-like bond with Logan, who lost his mother at a young age and is constantly belittled by his father. Kalen is also in a relationship with Jadica, who is admired by almost everyone in their village.
When Logan is publicly humiliated by his father in front of potential employers, he leaves the village, and both Kalen and Jadica are left with guilt for not standing up for him. Soon after, a mysterious group of clerics, druids, a warlock, and a warrior arrive searching for Logan. They reveal a prophecy that marks Logan as the destined one to bring forth the great Fiend Astaroth and destroy the world.
Determined to find him and keep him safe, Kalen and Jadica join their quest, facing many hardships along the way. The story is filled with plot twists, adventure, and strong found-family moments that keep you engaged till the very end. The world-building is rich, and the characters are well developed.
“We can’t save the world. Sometimes, we can’t even save those closest to us,” is a line from the book that reminds us that no matter how hard we try, some things remain beyond our control. We cannot save someone who doesn’t want to be saved.
“Stories are written by the victors of conflict,” is another striking quote that emphasizes how history is shaped. Not always by those who are right, but by those who remain. Even a small shift in perspective can completely change the narrative.
The book has good humor, and the premise is strong. That said, the plot twists are amazing and stands out as one of the highlights of the book.
If you love high-stakes dark epic fantasy with romance, forged friendships, found family, action-packed magical elements, and a fast-paced story that keeps you hooked till the end, this is your pick.
